Seniors Dominate in Annual Field Day, Earn Three Days Camping

The seniors, for yet another year, won Midland's annual Field Day event. Highlights were the log-chopping contest, which, due to we wood, went on and on and caused a number of blisters; the leap frog race, which the juniors won by a leg, and the tug-of-war, which saw the seniors defeat the juniors. The juniors took second place, and the feisty freshmen finished third. The sophomores did a nice job participating. By most accounts, this was the most enthusiastic and hard-fought Field Day, perhaps owing to the cooler weather. Actually, it's due to the fact that this year's seniors are a terrific group who put their heart into everything they do!

Annual Triathlon Results

The fourth annual Midland Triathlon was held recently, with a record eight individual competitors (only one the last couple years) vying for the top spot, and 11 other teams racing against each other. Sheridan Stegner `09 won the individual event for the third straight year. Faculty member Dan Mays had the fastest bike time, Ian Farmer `08 had the fastest run, and faculty member Laurie Munger won the swimming heat. Thanks, Don Redl, for putting this on!

Emma Duncan's Remarkable Achievement

Senior Emma Duncan (heading to Sarah Lawrence next fall) performed The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman, 90-minute show, for the school recently. The play, about the poet Emily Dickinson, collects her letters and poems into a narrative that gives insight into what makes her one of America's greatest poets. Emma's performance was brilliant, from the use of her hands to her costuming, and particularly the pitch-perfect delivery of thousands of lines. Emma, who has been in every production since her freshman year (and has even staged a few herself!), is to be commended for this performance, which serves as her senior thesis. Bravo, EDunc!

Juniors Put on Great Dance Weekend

Every spring, Midland juniors set out to entertain the school for a weekend, rewarding the seniors for all their hard work, and attempting, for the first time, to lead the school in preparation for their own senior year. The Class of 2009 chose to keep all of us here on campus for the weekend, an indication of how much they love the school. On Friday night, hypnotist Bruce Wilcox came and put students like Tasslyn through some funny paces (top left). Saturday there were clubs galore, including golf cart-chauffeured trips to the Res (top middle), and games of basketball, rugby, and ultimate frisbee. Saturday night, the band Threes and Nines played at Stillman, and then there was pie for Sunday's breakfast (bottom right). Great job, juniors, and thanks for a great weekend.

Seniors Pull Away Towards the End of Brain Bowl

As it should be, the seniors were victorious in this year's annual Brain Bowl, the yearly contest that pits class against class to see who knows more trivia, both Midland-centric and general. Earning a slew of points in the music section, and some when it came to sports, the seniors held off an inspired freshman team. And when it came to the final question--to name all of the faculty homes on campus--Emma Munger was prepared, and came up with the correct list. This perhaps atoned for missing the question about where Ben and Laurie, who JUST HAPPEN to be her parents, met. Emma, there is a huge difference between Montana State University and the University of Montana. The juniors won the costume points, inspired by the movie Walkabout. No one could tell what the freshmen were, and the sophomores all honored their class president, Carl Swindle, by dressing like him. The seniors were spa-goers, for better of worse. As for the MC, his attempt at Chuck Norris was, um, a bit thin.

Where on the Campus?

Every couple of weeks, a new image will appear on this page, found somewhere on Midland's immediate campus. The first student to correctly respond about where the photo was taken will receive a roll of Life Savers. If you know the answer, email or talk to Derek, and be as precise as possible!
Past winners: Sheridan, Vanessa, Colin, Kyle, Ross, Colin, Ross, Zeph, Callis/Blaze, Sarah B., Nessa, Joey/Becca, Nessa, Blaze, Nessa (now outlawed from the competition), Blaze/Becca, Joey/Ross; Ethan
