Goals
of Midland School’s Mathematics Program
Upon completion of Midland School’s math program students will
have developed comfort, facility, and enjoyment working with numbers.
They will understand the motives for learning particular mathematical
concepts. While students will have developed organized and rigorous
patterns of thinking and problem solving, they will also be able to
take academic risks through trial and error. Not only will Midland students
have the confidence to compute mentally and manually but they will also
be able to intelligently use technology to solve real world problems.
They will appreciate the importance of units of measurement to interconnect
disciplines and provide significance to computations. Students will
gather and analyze data to model real-world phenomena and will be capable
of extracting meaning from large quantities of graphical and tabular
information. Facility with mathematical systems is necessary to understand
and interpret current social, political and scientific information reported
in newspapers, magazines and professional and scientific journals. In
all of these areas, students will develop the ability to neatly and
clearly present written work..
