Class of 2010 Installs Midland's Fourth Solar Array For the fourth straight year, sophomore students in Lise Goddard's Chemistry class have installed a solar array to help produce energy for the school. Additional projects the sophomores are undertaking include baking in a solar oven, and repairing a damaged solar panel on the sophomore boys' bathroom. Over the course of two days, sophomores clean panels, dig and pour the foundation, insert the scaffolding for the panels, wire the panels, and attach the panels to the skeleton. The culminating moment will be when they flip the switch and watch Stillman's (the school's dining hall) energy meter go backwards. Thanks Lise and Midland's Class of 2010 for making Midland even greener!

Earthen Bench in Girls’ Yard Midland’s Sustainable Building class sited, designed, and built an earthen bench capable of seating ten under a pepper tree at the convergence of the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior girls’ quads. With Lise Goddard, Sophomores Blaze Elation, Frances King, and Corina Brown chose materials with low embodied energy that would stand up to all kinds of weather. The foundation, laid over a gravel bed and drain, was made with urbanite (broken chunks of old sidewalks or foundations, in this case the floor from Midland’s old hay barn that burned down), a façade of Alamo Pintado river rocks, and lime-Portland cement mortar. The stabilized compressed earth blocks were made on site, and were laid to mimic the arching curves of the pepper tree. With guidance from neighbor Betty Seaman, and with help from Nora Livingston ’07, the bench was plastered with a base coat of earthen plaster and two coats of lime plaster painted in fresco style with a dark umber pigment. Future Sustainable Building classes will continue to expand and beautify Midland’s outdoor living space with similar projects designed and built by students.
