Sophomore Solar Installation 2009-10

The sophomores endured a couple of difficult days hiking and camping in rainy, cold, and windy Joshua Tree.  They returned to campus to install a 3-kW grid-tied photovoltaic array that will help power our well pumps. This will be the first array of 5 (or possibly 4), one each year with successive sophomore classes, that will meet 100% of our electricity needs for pumping water.

For 6 years in a row, past sophomore classes installed a 3.5-kW photovoltaic array that ties into the electricity meter at Stillman Hall. Now, over 15% of Midland's campus electricity needs (not including faculty homes) are met with solar power.

Midland School's Solar Success Story

Midland School has been installing PV arrays with our 10th graders every year for almost a decade.  We hope you are captivated by the can-do spirit from Midland School, a solar success story that can serve as an inspiration and model to others.

Below are links to 4 documents created by Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs - one which contains the story entitled, "Transitioning to Renewable Energy - A Working Model from Secondary Education," two photo collages - one of our 10th graders' installation this past month and one of our installations over the past eight years, and finally, a juxtaposition of graphs – our annual incremental solar production against the backdrop of the relentless Keeling Curve.

Class of 2011 Installs Midland's Fifth Solar Array

For the fifth straight year, sophomore students in Lise Goddard's Chemistry class have installed a solar array to help produce energy for the school. Additional projects the sophomores are undertaking include baking in a solar oven, and repairing a damaged solar panel on the sophomore boys' bathroom. Over the course of two days, sophomores clean panels, dig and pour the foundation, insert the scaffolding for the panels, wire the panels, and attach the panels to the skeleton. The culminating moment will be when they flip the switch and watch Stillman's (the school's dining hall) energy meter go backwards. Thanks Lise and Midland's Class of 2011 for making Midland even greener!
