Outdoor Leadership Students Go Surfing

With temperatures into the triple digits in October, students took refuge with back to back days at the beach. On Wednesday, October 12, Outdoor Leadership students headed down to Refugio for their third surf session of the school year.  Everyone had a great time playing in the waves on a mix of surf boards and boogie boards.  Claire caught a number of great waves, while Cole caught his first wave ever and got up!

Students Plan Outdoor Leadership Trip

During a weekend in April, the Outdoor Leadership students took a trip up the coast to explore the southernmost reaches of the Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens) which are the tallest growing trees in the world.  California actually boasts the tallest (coastal redwoods), largest (Giant Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada), and the oldest (Ancient Bristlecone Pine of the Inyo/White Mountains) trees in the world.

The group was undaunted by road closures, greater than expected rain, and unnerving amounts of poison oak on the trail.  We had amazing campsites, unbelievable views, great food (including baking brownies) and big fun.  The trip was entirely planned and implemented by the students as a part of their training as outdoor leaders.  This group is on their way to being able to plan and lead their own trips here at Midland.

Renovated Trip Shed

The trip shed that is used to store camping gear and Outdoor Leadership equipment has been renovated and reorganized. The improvements were due mainly to the hard work of Juan Zepeda.

Spring Season Outdoor Leadership Group

The students in Outdoor Leadership this Spring sports season participated in various activities this week. These photos are of students pitching a tent and playing a balancing game called "Blazo."

Preparing for Joshua Tree

The outdoor leadership crew prepared for its joint trip with the top Cross Country runners to Joshua Tree National Park.  The crew spent the day working on critical balance exercises, including slack-lining, rope games and stretching. The group will spend three days in the high desert. Outdoor leadership will focus on hiking, bouldering and trail work while the runners will train for the CA state championships with some long runs.
