During a weekend in April, the Outdoor Leadership students took a trip up the coast to explore the southernmost reaches of the Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens) which are the tallest growing trees in the world. California actually boasts the tallest (coastal redwoods), largest (Giant Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada), and the oldest (Ancient Bristlecone Pine of the Inyo/White Mountains) trees in the world.
The group was undaunted by road closures, greater than expected rain, and unnerving amounts of poison oak on the trail. We had amazing campsites, unbelievable views, great food (including baking brownies) and big fun. The trip was entirely planned and implemented by the students as a part of their training as outdoor leaders. This group is on their way to being able to plan and lead their own trips here at Midland.
