Art Installations

The freshmen spent two weeks getting better acquainted with their surroundings during Foundations in Visual Art's annual outdoor art unit.  They were charged with the task to create site-specific art installations using only natural materials.  Using the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration, each student chose to explore one of the elements of art (such as line, value, form, and color) which helped guide them along their way.  Their projects' livelihoods were challenged by the elements, namely the rain we had on and off, though students overcame these obstacles with a new understanding of patience on their side.

Student Life Endowment Plan

Due to the generous support of Judge Peter Smith '51, Midland students have had the opportunity to manage and spend money from their own endowment for student activities and initiatives.  The goal of this endowment is to expand the school's mission of developing self-reliant individuals to the financial arena.  During May in Don Redl's Financial Economics and Investing class, students were asked to write proposals for investing $50,000 of the endowment.  The top two student proposals, as voted by their peers, were developed by Mariah Chen '11 and Micah Kalem '13.  Mariah and Micah presented their plans to the Student Council and the Council chose Micah's investment plan.  The Student Life Endowment allows the Student Council to fund student activities that (this year) have included refurbishment of the Munger Commons Room and participation in a tri-school Carnival for Equality. Most recently, the Council approved Don’s proposal to use $1000 of the students’ money to create an account with Kiva,  a microfinancing organization through which the Midland student body will make loans to small business ventures in the developing world.

Congratulations to Micah and a big thanks to Judge Smith for all of his support!

A Dog's Life: GPS Tracking of Our Local "Wildlife"

As many Midlanders know, the dogs on campus have the best life. While everyone is sitting in class, working on a research paper, or taking a test, the dogs are out playing all day, getting attention from a number of students, chasing squirrels, barking at the bell, or simply taking a nap. In Statistics, our students tracked five different dogs to uncover their secret lives. The five dogs are all owned by students and they were tracked from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday since these days are roughly the same in the Midland daily schedule. The GPS data was then uploaded into Google Earth in order to visualize the dog's day. The GPS tracks were also analyzed using the Fathom Dynamic Data program by Key Curriculum.

DOTTIE

After living in the city of San Francisco for four and a half years, Dottie came to Midland to live the country life. An old Pug, she sometimes finds it difficult living out in the wild. But she proved that she could handle it after surviving twenty-four hours alone in the wilderness.

Besides exploring Midland’s vast property, Dottie’s favorite activities range from sleeping to begging for food. She has a reputation of being the ugliest, cutest, friendliest dog on campus. Her excessively people-friendly skills have often earned her her favorite foods, those being pizza and carrots.

Though many assume she’s a puppy by her looks, Dottie is in fact middle aged. Currently, she is six years old.

She was brought to Midland almost two years ago. In the time she’s been here she’s lived with her owner, Nessa. The move was at first difficult, but Dottie has grown to love Midland and looks forward to going back whenever she’s anywhere else.

GOLDIE

Meet Goldie, the shining star of our Midland community.  Standing at a formidable two feet, this hunk of love is always ready to snuggle.  She came to us from Savannah of Paso Robles, where she lives on a farm.  She has walked this earth for thirteen years, giving birth to seven litters.  Don’t be alarmed by her repulsive stench, it’s merely the smell of decomposing love.  This will be the second year at Midland for this golden retriever.  Although she’s a purebred, this girl is easy going.  She’ll eat anything and doesn’t discriminate based on shape, color, or size of kibble.  Between balancing her busy career and demanding social schedule, Goldie enjoys getting her belly rubbed in public locations.  She lures you in with her soft eyes and once you get a gander of her heart-shaped nose, you’ll be hooked.  Don’t let her calm and seemingly sloth-like nature fool you; this girl is a firecracker waiting to be unleashed. Unfortunately, she is often kept on a leash, because she has trouble hearing and seeing.  Look for this stunning beauty in the presence of Mariah or Savannah and she’ll be sure to nuzzle you.

LOUIE

Louie is a two year old male Golden-Doodle.  He enjoys eating Trader Joe's Sausage Treats (and/or whatever food Phil Hasseljian sneaks him throughout the day).  His golden locks and sweet disposition are only a few of the many doggy traits that makes him quite the ladies man.  His favorite activity is playing with the girls in Lower Yard and running away from the boys in Middle Yard.  He is incredibly loving and when he’s clean, he is a great dog to snuggle with in bed.  Louie has been a member of the dog community at Midland since 2008.  His owner is Ruby and they live happily together in San Francisco.

BUBBA

Bubba is a four year old Shih-Tzu from California.  He has lived at Midland for two years and he loves to sleep or watch people.  Bubba's favorite food is chicken and he enjoys it when people hold him.  Even though he is one of the smaller dogs on campus, Bubba doesn't seem to notice.  When the big dogs start to chase squirrels, Bubba joins in on the chase.  He also loves to play and wrestle with dogs three to four times his size.  If you ever approach Bubba, be sure to scratch him on the head or behind the ears.

MARKO

Marko, the rogue warrior, is the enemy of all local branches, and Selena’s BFF.  Marko is four years old and was born in Chico, California.  He loves hanging out in Selena’s Room, and getting in on long extensive games of Monkey in the Middle.  Marko spends most of his time either with Selena or fighting packs of wild coyotes with a blindfold over his eyes to make it even.  If he’s not fighting packs of coyotes, he spends his time on the top of Grass Mountain practicing German in his sleep.  Marko is a loyal, crazy, and energetic dog who seems to have never heard of the word exhaustion.  Marko’s good pace is a suicide pace and he’s always ready to die.  Marko is a German Shepherd weighing in at 70lbs, standing at 4 ½ ft. tall, and a startling length of 4ft 6inches.  He is equipped with hawk eyes, and ears like a Meerkat, and he is the perfect fighting machine for joy and happiness.
